CAY HILL: St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) officially opened the new Urology Clinic on Monday in the presence of Minister of VSA, Emil Lee, during a gathering of invited healthcare stakeholders and SMMC staff at the new clinic at SMMC.
The new multi-purpose clinic, which also houses the Neurology and Pulmonology specialties, is able to cater to the growing demand for these medical services on island and reinforces SMMC’s objective of providing quality care, close to home.
The new clinic has been made possible by a financial agreement between SMMC and “Zorgverzerkeringskantoor BES” (in short: ZVK). In addition to patients from St. Maarten, the clinic is expected to also treat a considerable number of patients originating from the BES islands (in particular: Saba and St. Eustatius), who will not have to travel very far from home anymore to receive treatment.
The new clinic consists of 2 Doctor’s offices, occupied by SMMC’s resident Urologists Dr. Diego Ramos and Dr. Carlos Rojas, which are used for Urology consultations, 1 Urology examination room and 1 room is reserved for consultations with rotational Pulmonology and Neurology specialists.
Addressing the gathering, Minister of VSA Emil Lee stressed the importance for the St. Maarten community to have access to more and more specialties right here on St. Maarten. “Ultimately, we strive to improve the quality of life for the residents of St. Maarten by continually raising the level of care and to provide direct access to care”.
SMMC’s Medical Director Dr. Felix Holiday thanked ZVK for their contribution in making the new clinic possible and Government and SZV for their role as Tripartite members in facilitating as well. Dr. Holiday emphasized that the new clinic also caters to Pulmonology and Neurology patients making it a true multi-purpose environment.
SMMC’s Urologist, Dr. Carlos Rojas, gave an insightful presentation highlighting the capabilities of the new Urology clinic through the use of state-of-the-art equipment and procedures, before providing the audience with a tour of the new facility.
