While SMMC acknowledges the positive effect receiving visitors has on patients’ mental health, well-being, and ultimately their physical recovery, patients, visitors and companions alike are asked to avoid visiting the hospital if they are experiencing any flu-like symptoms. This is in the interest of protecting patients as well as staff.
To encourage a healing environment, children younger than 12 years may only visit patients on the Medical/Surgical and OBGYN wards. For the protection of our newborns on the OBGYN ward, siblings of the newborn are the only children younger than 12 years who are allowed to visit under an adult’s supervision. Children are prohibited from visiting the ICU, Pediatric Ward and patients who have been placed in medical isolation for infection control (IC) reasons. Children visitors must at all times be accompanied by a responsible adult. Noisy or disruptive children will be asked to leave the patient wards.
Patients placed in medical isolation may only have visitors from his/her direct family household. Family members are requested to follow all instructions given by staff regarding wearing a gown, mask, and proper hand washing before entering and leaving the room. Children are forbidden to visit patients who have been placed in medical isolation but are encouraged to communicate digitally via phone, video call or instant messaging.
Flowers and plants are not allowed in the ICU patient rooms. Cell phones must be switched off before entering the ICU and usage of cell phones is strictly prohibited. Visitors are also asked to follow the instructions of the ICU team in the interest of safeguarding our patients' health.
Patients are allowed two visitors at a time and the visitors are allowed to rotate. Early visitors are requested to have a seat in the main patio until the doors to the patient’s wards are opened for visiting hours. Persons waiting for more information on patients in the Delivery Room or Operation Room are also requested to sit on our open-air main patio until allowed to see the patient or speak to his/her doctor.
Visitors or companions waiting on the patio are kindly asked to not conduct loud telephone calls, watch videos or play music without headphones to avoid disturbing other visitors.
