Our Cardiology Department offers general diagnostic and therapeutic cardiology services for patients with heart and blood vessel-related conditions including implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and pacemaker insertion, echocardiography, and cardiac computed tomography (CT).
We also provide treatments, such as medication, lifestyle changes, and minimally invasive procedures, to manage conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, arrhythmias, and valve problems. Our patients receive preventative care and education to maintain and improve their heart health and reduce the risk of heart problems. Our team of cardiologists and other medical professionals at the department work together to provide comprehensive and individualized care for each patient and their lifestyle.

Dr. Emiko Bird-Lake was born on St. Maarten and has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from the University of South Florida. Upon the completion of her degree, she attended medical school at the Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands and specialized in Cardiology at the Vrije University Medical Center in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her subspecialty is cardiac imaging which includes echography and cardiac computerized tomography (cardiac CT).
Dr. Bird-Lake worked in several hospitals in the Netherlands including Maasstaad Hospital in Rotterdam before joining SMMC in 2016 as our first permanent Cardiologist.
Today, she is the leading cardiologist at our Cardiology Department and serves as the chair of SMMC’s Medical Staff Board, chair of the Ethics Committee, member of the CPR committee, member of the Council of Health on St. Maarten, board member and medical advisor of the St. Maarten Heart and Stroke Foundation and is certified in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support.
Dr. Lily Berman studied Medicine at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, specialized in Cardiology in Nahariya, Israel and then completed a fellowship in electrophysiology in Toronto, Canada. After returning to the Netherlands, she was registered as a Cardiologist and obtained the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) Certificate for cardiac rhythm devices. Her main areas of interest, besides general Cardiology, are rhythm disturbances, prevention of sudden cardiac death and cardiac rhythm devices.
She worked in the Netherlands in several hospitals and has been working as a rotational cardiologist at SMMC from 2018 until she came to live and work on Sint Maarten permanently in July 2023.
She lives with Louis and enjoys music, vegetarian cooking, swimming, learning languages and reading.
