St. Maarten General Hospital - Overview

Quarterly Updates

The St. Maarten General Hospital is being built with seismic base isolator technology making it resistant to earthquakes measuring up to 6 on the Richter scale. In total 108 seismic isolators (5 different types) will be installed allowing the Main Building to remain static while there is seismic activity. Above photo shows a base isolator installed on site.

On February 22,2024 the supplier of the seismic isolators FipMec gave a presentation on the seismic base isolator technology being utilized in the SMGH Project to the SMMC Board of Directors, the Management Team, and members of the Supervisory Council. Later that day FipMec gave a similar presentation to architects, engineers, and contractors along with other external stakeholders. Photo FINSO’s Project Manager during the presentation to the stakeholders.

In the event of a large disaster the SMGH will be self-sustainable up to 7 days. In addition to the earthquake resistant seismic base isolator technology, there are 7 water tanks and 8 diesel tanks that will feed 4 generators, to provide water and electricity for 7 days.The installation of the water tanks has been completed with finishing to occur at a later date;

Above photo shows 5 of the 8 diesel tanks with manhole covers during installation.

Part of the construction of the SMGH includes a new Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) for which construction is currently ongoing. Once completed the current facility (SMMC) will be connected to the new WWTP prior to the completion of SMGH.
