Our Anesthesiology Clinic provides essential medical services for patients undergoing surgery or other medical procedures including local and general anesthesia and epidurals. The clinic is staffed by anesthesiologists, who are trained to manage pain and ensure the safe and effective administration of anesthesia during surgical and other medical procedures. Patients can expect a thorough evaluation and personalized care plan, which may include the use of local, regional, or general anesthesia, as well as pain management techniques to manage pain and discomfort during and after their procedure. The anesthesiology team works closely with other members of the medical staff, such as surgeons and nurses, to ensure the safe and successful outcome of each procedure.
Recently, we also opened our Pain Management Clinic, which specializes in the treatment and management of chronic pain. Our Anesthesiologists/Pain Management Specialists perform various interventional pain management procedures such as TENS therapy, S ketamine infusions, and facet, nerve, sacroiliac, intercostal nerve, and spinal nerve root blocks.

Dr. Yelena George was born in Perm, Russia, obtained her MD degree from a University in Ukraine, and went on to pursue a career in Anesthesiology and Intensive care. After completing her postgraduate studies, she defended her Ph.D. in Clinical Anesthesiology at the prestigious Schenov Moscow Medical Academy. Throughout her academic career, she participated in various conferences and authored nine publications on the topic of clinical anesthesiology, with her clinical research being presented at the 9th European Congress of Anesthesiology in Jerusalem, Israel.
Dr. George has acquired broad working experience in her field, having worked not only in her home country but also in South America, a British overseas territory, and St. Maarten, where she has been based for the past 19 years. Her areas of expertise include the Operating Room, Emergency Room, Intensive Care, and Air Transport of critically ill patients.
In addition to her direct medical responsibilities as an anesthesiologist, Dr. George is also deeply involved in hospital administration. She serves as the Clinical Coordinator for the ICU, Vice-Chair of the Medical Staff Board, and is a member of several committees, including the FONA/Safety Committee, the Retrospectus/Complications Committee, and the Medical Ethics Committee.
Dr. Jumoke Vreden studied at the Vrije University in Amsterdam and completed her residency in Anesthesiology at the Amsterdam Medical Center (AMC). She is no stranger to SMMC as she previously worked as an Emergency Room Physician and Anesthesia Resident. After her time at SMMC, she returned to the Netherlands to continue her residency and went on to work at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital and then moved to Curacao where she worked at the St. Elizabeth Hospital and the Curacao Medical Center (CMC).
After five years of working at CMC, Dr. Vreden and her family made the decision to move back to St. Maarten where she chose to become a permanent Anesthesiology specialist at SMMC. In addition to her clinical duties as a general anesthesiologist, Dr. Vreden enjoys organizing acute care training and educational programs to empower healthcare personnel to increase patient safety, staff satisfaction, and quality of care and plans to continue to do so at SMMC.
