Our Nephrology (kidney disease) Clinic offers general nephrology services for patients with kidney-related conditions including chronic kidney disease, kidney failure, and kidney stones, among others. We provide a range of services, such as hemodialysis, the treatment of shunt thrombosis and shunt obstruction, kidney transplant evaluation and management, and management of high blood pressure and diabetes, which are risk factors for kidney disease.
We work with the Transatlantic Kidney Transplant program at the Amsterdam University Medical Center (Amsterdam UMC) in the Netherlands to provide our nephrology patients with living and deceased donor kidneys. The department also boasts a state-of-the-art Dialysis Suite with 21 hemodialysis positions and the possibility to provide dialysis to visitors (tourists).

Dr. Gabe G. van Essen has been an internist/nephrologist since 1997 and has worked in large hospitals in Groningen, Enschede and Den Haag as well as a brief stint in Aruba before joining SMMC in 2016.
He is currently the head of of our Hemodialys Department where we offer dialysis services to patients experiencing kidney failure from St. Maarten, Saba and St. Eustatius. In addition to kidney replacement therapy, his special interests include chronic kidney disease and diabetes mellitus.
He also serves as the chairmanof the Faults or Near Accidents (FONA)/Hospital Safety Committee.
