St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) is pleased to introduce the expansion of its Internal Medicine and Endocrinology care with the addition of Internal Medicine/Endocrinology Specialist Dr. Sherien Khodabaks. Endocrinology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine that deals with hormones (the body’s chemical messengers), endocrine glands (the organs that produce hormones), and metabolism. Hormones are essential for everyday survival. They control temperature, sleep, mood, stress, growth, reproduction and more.
An Endocrinologist typically treats patients with complex hormone disorders and metabolic diseases such as disorders of the pituitary gland, disorders of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, disorders of the adrenal glands, osteoporosis and metabolic bone diseases, diabetes mellitus, inborn errors of metabolism and neuroendocrine tumors.
Endocrinology care is provided by Dr. Sherien Khodabaks, one of SMMC’s permanent Internal Medicine/Endocrinology Specialists. Dr. Khodabaks studied medicine in Suriname and completed her residency in Internal Medicine and subspecialty in Endocrinology in the Netherlands at the Maastricht University Medical Center. Upon the completion of her education, she moved back to Suriname before ultimately moving to St. Maarten and joining SMMC.
When asked about her motivation for joining SMMC, Dr. Khodabaks said “I was looking forward to another challenge outside of Suriname when the opportunity to join SMMC arose. I always wanted to expand my international experience in my chosen field of work. At my clinic, the most common endocrinological disorders I see are diabetes mellitus and diabetes mellitus gravid, thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism and goiter, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), male hypogonadism and osteoporosis. Working at SMMC has been a great experience so far and I am really enjoying working with my colleagues and treating my patients on this beautiful island”.
