Lunch with your Doctor is a special event brought to you by the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), part of its 25th Anniversary celebrations.
The event, scheduled for April 7th, will take place at the Belair Community Center.
April 7th is World Health Day, “We want to use this activity to commemorate world health day and empower people to take charge of their health by discussing and asking questions about important health topics. And we are doing that by making it personal, inviting our doctors to the table talking to patients in a small group setting over lunch,” says Mr. Kees Klarenbeek.
At each table, there is a designated health topic which an SMMC medical doctor will talk about. Patrons have the opportunity to select two or three topics they are interested in. One topic will be selected for the patron who will sit at that table with 7 other patrons and the doctor.
During a three course lunch, the patrons can interact with one another and the doctor about the table topic.
The time scheduled for the event is 11:45am – 1:30pm. Lunch begins at 12pm.
“I am excited about this event to talk to patients, family of patients or potential patients about a health topic that is very important for persons on the island to be aware of,” says Dr. Menno Misset, General Surgeon.
Dr. Menno Misset will talk about Diabetic Foot at his table. “I agree, it is not a usual table subject, but it is very important as so many patients on this island have diabetes that often leads to complications in the feet.”
Other participating doctors are Gynecologist Dr. Dorette Courtar her topic Women Health; Oncologist Dr. Henk Wassenaar his topic Cancer-Colorectal and Breast; Cardiologists Dr, Emiko Bird-Lake and Dr. Meredith Sedney, will both have tables each addressing Heart Disease; Radiologist Dr. Brice Watinou his topic is Breast Cancer Detection; Pediatrician Dr. Peter Offringa topic is Diabetes in Children; Nephrologist Dr. Maite Gil-Gonzales will talk about topic Kidney Diseases and more specifically, kidney disease caused by Diabetes; General Surgeon Dr. Felix Holiday, Anesthesiologist Dr. Yelena George and Ear Nose and Throat Specialist Dr. Anouk van Peteghem will both address health topics within their specialty.
In addition to the doctors, SMMC dietician Jeshneila Carty will talk about Nutrition and Diabetes at her table.
There is an emphasis on Diabetes at the Lunch with your Doctor as the theme for World Health Day is “Beat Diabetes”.
