The mission of the St. Maarten Medical Center is:
SMMC provides high quality, accessible and affordable hospital care in the best interest of the patient, by closely cooperating with strategic partners, within a safe environment with motivated, qualified and competent staff.
St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) is an ambitious and growing hospital organization on St. Maarten. With approximately 425 FTEs, 28 specialists, and a capacity of 95 beds, we continuously strive to ensure safe, quality health care, close to home. Our primary service area of St. Maarten, St. Eustatius, and Saba, represents a total population of approximately 60.000 people, constituting a multi-cultural mix with more than 100 nationalities. In addition, we also offer healthcare services to two million visitors annually. SMMC has started the construction of the new St. Maarten General Hospital (SMGH) to expand its services to accommodate the increased care demand of the people of St. Maarten, its visitors, and the neighboring islands. The new hospital is planned to be operational in 2025.
The vision of the St. Maarten Medical Center is:
SMMC is the general hospital that guarantees high quality hospital care based on patients’ needs, to residents and visitors of St. Maarten and her surrounding islands, close to home.
“Working at SMMC is more than working in the hospital to me, but working in and for St. Maarten. My job brings me great satisfaction; to work on the island that I call home, caring for my community whom I call my people. The appreciation we get from our patients can never be expressed in money or words. Our patients will occasionally remember their surgical procedure but they will always remember the personal and highest quality care and service that we give. We cannot give anything less than our best.”
Dr. Felix Holiday
Medical Director
SMMC is committed to the ongoing improvement of the quality and safety of care provided to its patients. The hospital’s main focus is to reinforce a culture and environment where all employees are patient focused and provide the highest of quality care services in accordance with national and international best practices. By adopting the concept of Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI), the hospital strives to better meet client needs and exceed their expectations. Our patients and staff are central in our CQI, whereby their Safety, Health and Satisfaction are the pillars defining our quality care. Through tracking of key quality and safety indicators, we are dedicated to improved patient outcomes.
As we shift our organization towards a new General Hospital, we are aiming to become a Joint Commission International (JCI) accredited organization which is considered the gold standard in global health care. JCI accredited organizations are rigorously evaluated and must demonstrate committed compliance to quality care delivery based on the most current evidence-based practice standards. This means SMMC is working to improve and implement high quality care initiatives, patient-safe policies, practices, and procedures required to meet those standards.
Our aim is to develop SMMC to a prominent medical institution in the Caribbean in order to deliver quality care close to home. The new St. Maarten General Hospital will be a state-of-the-art hospital, Category 5 hurricane resilient and means an expansion to the following:
